Sperlonga rises on a hill surrounded mostly by the Tirrenian Sea, that is geographically an extension of the Ausonian mountain chain. It is 55 meters above sea level and the structure of the town is based on a defence to the frequent assault from the sea. The four towers infact were built as a lookout towers to see in advance the enemy.

The name of the city comes probably from the Latin word ‘spelunca’ that means ‘cave’, the cave of Tiberio. The center of the old Sperlonga is a fascinating place for its architecture and for the way the houses are built. Many little pedestrian streets run all over the entire hill passing through hundreds of limestone painted houses all connected to each other. Arches, little stairs, narrow and hidden paths like in a maze, all for you to be discovered. Not to forget the little harbour which is important for the tourism as well as the economy of Sperlonga.
